Is donating bone marrow dangerous? A bone marrow transplant, also known as a stem cell transplant, is a medical procedure that replaces damaged or diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside your bones that produces blood cells. Bone marrow donation is generally considered safe but like any medical procedure. However, there are potential risks:

The most serious risk is related to the use of anesthesia during the procedure. Side effects include nausea, vomiting, headaches, or decreased blood pressure. About 2.4% of donors experience serious complications, such as an anesthesia complication.

Minor side effects for donors after bone marrow transplant are back or hip pain at the donation site is common, and feeling tired is expected after the procedure, minor bruising may occur around the donation site.

In some cases, certain donors face serious complications (rare) effects such as there's a small risk of infection at the donation site. In rare cases, excessive bleeding can occur. Although uncommon, there's a slight risk of nerve or muscle damage near the donation site.

Rigorous medical screening is conducted to ensure the safety of both the donor and the recipient. The procedure is performed by experienced medical teams in a controlled hospital setting. The risks and recovery experience can vary from person to person.
