How long should a real estate video walkthrough be?

Keep a real estate video walkthrough under two minutes for the listing itself. Zillow Showcase caps videos at 120 seconds, and a typical three-bedroom home fits comfortably in 60 to 120. Social platforms allow longer, but a shorter cut that opens on the best room usually holds attention better.

Where does that number come from? Partly from the platform. Zillow allows one video per listing, up to 120 seconds, uploaded through a content provider, with no persistent agent logos, watermarks or advertising. Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts both allow up to three minutes now; Reels rose from 90 seconds in January 2025. The rest is a rule of thumb: 8 to 15 seconds for each main room and 3 to 5 for small spaces like closets and hallways, which keeps most homes inside the Zillow limit.

Is video even worth the effort? Be realistic. In the National Association of Realtors' 2025 Generational Trends report, 83% of online buyers rated photos very useful, while only 29% said the same of videos. In NAR's staging survey, 48% of buyers' agents rated video more important to clients, against 73% for photos. So make the photos excellent first, then add a real estate video walkthrough for what stills can't do, which is showing how the rooms connect.

Pace is where length gets decided in practice. Walk at about half your normal speed, pause two or three seconds at each doorway before stepping in, and make one move per clip. A move that feels too slow while you film usually looks about right on playback. Spend a few extra seconds in the kitchen, the main living space and the primary bedroom, and give closets and the laundry a quick glance.

Format is the second half of the length question. Film horizontally for the listing page, the MLS virtual tour field and YouTube. Use vertical, 9:16, only for Reels, Shorts and stories, and shoot those separately; cropping a horizontal walkthrough into a vertical one throws away about two-thirds of every room. Export two versions from the start, an unbranded cut for the MLS and portals and a branded one with your name for your own channels. MLS Now bans agent names, links and branding, even in the description of a linked YouTube video, while Canopy MLS dropped its unbranded requirement in August 2024, so check your own board.

Don't confuse a filmed real estate video walkthrough with one generated from photos. A filmed video records the path as it is; one generated from stills must invent what the photos didn't show, like a hallway or the far side of a doorway. October produces the second kind: its AI video model builds smooth camera moves between the finished photos of each room you captured, in HD or 4K, and it is not filmed footage. Watch every second against the house before you publish, and label it as AI-generated where your MLS asks. A real estate video walkthrough of this kind comes with photos for $99 a place, and the first place is free.

Every MLS, platform and listing is different, and rules change, so confirm the current limits with your MLS or listing agent before you export.
